2020-2023 Cricket World Cup Super League
Since the 20th of July 2020, the Cricket World Cup Super League is underway, and it will determine the teams that directly continue straight for the World Cup in 2023 and which will advance to the World Cup Qualifier, having another chance to qualify for the big competition.
There are 13 teams participating in the Super League, 12 of which are full members of the ICC, and the Netherlands, being automatically placed because they were the winners of the 2015-2017 ICC World Cricket League Championship. The other 12 teams are as follows:
- Afghanistan
- Australia
- Bangladesh
- England
- India
- Ireland
- New Zealand
- Pakistan
- South Africa
- Sri Lanka
- West Indies
- Zimbabwe
For now, we only know that India is sure to play at the World Cup because they are the hosts. Later, the best 7 teams will automatically qualify for the World Cup. The remaining 5 will go on to play the Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier
The 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier is a tournament that will be hosted by Zimbabwe in June and July of 2023 to decide the last two teams that will participate in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
There will be 10 participants in the qualifier, 5 of which are the bottom teams from the Super League, 3 teams from the World Cup League 2, and the top 2 teams from the World Cup Qualifier Play-off. Only 2 of the 10 will qualify for the World Cup, completing the 10 team tournament.
Another distinctive feature is that the World Cup Qualifier also determines who will have the 13th spot for the next World Cup Super League. The first 12 teams are safe and will participate in the next Super League. However, there is one more spot that can be taken.
Now, the 13th spot will either be the team that finished 13th or the winner of the 2019-2023 League 2. The teams won’t play any games against each other to determine who gets the spot, but the team that obtains the better spot in the World Cup Qualifier will become the 13 teams for the next Super League.
Cricket World Cup Super League Favourites and Underdogs
A lot of betting sites have labelled India the favourite to win the cricket World Cup Super League. The main factor for this is that they will be hosting the next Cricket World Cup in 2023. It is pretty obvious that they would like to string some wins before the World Cup starts, so getting results in the Super League will be a must.
Another favourite that comes neck to neck to India in the betting world is England. Not only are they considered one of the favourites because of the way they play, but because they were the winners of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, which was held in England and Wales.
The third country that is right on the tails of India and England is Australia. They have stringed some decent results in the past, and online betting sites also place them as one of the favourites.
As of this moment, the Cricket World Cup Super League is underway, and some teams have shown that they can cope with the favourites and even show them a hard time.
Bangladesh is an underdog who has shown signs of improvement and is ready to take on any team at the World Cup. Online sportsbooks aren’t yet convinced that Bangladesh has what it takes to go all the way; however, since they are doing pretty well in the Super League, many consider them the underdogs who can surprise the public and run towards the World Cup.
